However, the truth is that different seasons offer different spectacles even here in the north. The nature in Schleswig-Holstein is very diverse and there is so much to see and do! There are numerous protected areas in the region, but Holstein Switzerland Nature Park is one of the most visited ones. It is the largest in the country; situated near the Baltic Sea, this nature park offers hundreds of possibilities to explore its landscape on foot or by bike. There are around 200 lakes of different sizes, also suitable for many water-based activities.

Lauerburg Lakes is another nature park with more than 40 lakes dispersed among thick forests. This nature park is also home to many rare plant and animal species, some of which are endangered. Similar is the case with Aukrug Nature Park. Various ponds can be found hidden in small heather areas in between the thick woods.

Speaking of lakes, Eutin Lake is a place where you can admire nature while indulging in the history and culture of the region. This area was the former residence of the royals from when Schleswig-Holstein used to be a Duchy. There is a beautiful castle on the lakeshore, but the picturesque town is just as beautiful. There are different cultural events organized in the palace gardens in the summer months.
