Europe has a very varied flora and fauna: each European climate zone has its own spontaneous vegetation and typical animals that live in that area.

In the Mediterranean area, the typical vegetation is characterized by the so-called Mediterranean scrub in which bushes and shrubs that require little water, but temperatures always above zero, are encountered. They are typical of the Mediterranean scrub woods of oaks; of holm oaks; chestnut; of maritime pines; a rich undergrowth of evergreen shrubs, like juniper; the oleander; the strawberry tree; the myrtle. However, the phenomena of deforestation and frequent fires have, over time, led to a strong reduction of the woods present in this climatic zone and to the growth of spontaneous vegetation.

In these areas there are often cultivations of olive trees, vines, citrus fruits. The native fauna of the Mediterranean climatic area includes: wild boars; reptiles; hares; small rodents. The Atlantic area is extremely humid. This favors the growth of deciduous forests, that is maples; beech trees; elms; lime trees; oaks; birches. In the coldest and windswept areas there are the typical landscapes of the moor, namely: heather; ferns; rushes.Which animals are part of the native fauna of the Atlantic area? The native fauna of the Atlantic area consists of: deer; small mammals like foxes; hares; squirrels.

The sub-continental area is an area of transition between the Mediterranean, Atlantic and continental areas. For this reason, both the spontaneous vegetation and the original fauna of all three other climatic zones are present here to varying degrees. However, a certain prevalence is noted, as regards the vegetation: coniferous forests; deciduous forests; shrubs; while for what concerns the original fauna: of silver foxes; of deer; of moose; of brown bears; of wolves. The spontaneous vegetation of the continental area is given by the taiga. There are mainly coniferous forests, while in the undergrowths there are mosses and lichens. The native fauna of the continental area consists of: stoats; sable; silver foxes; deer; moose; brown bears; wolves. In the cold months, some species that live in the tundra, such as reindeer, also take refuge in the taiga.

In the areas bordering the Articolo Ocean, where temperatures remain below freezing for several consecutive years, the ground remains frozen for most of the year forming what is called permafrost. This English term means permanent frost and indicates those soils that, up to a depth of 500-600 meters, remain constantly frozen. During the summer, the superficial part of the ground, thanks to rains and rising temperatures, can also thaw, but the underlying part of the ground remains frozen. During the summer the typical vegetation of the tundra grows: lichens; mosses; shrubs, like blueberries; dwarf willows; birches; flowers, such as buttercups. Instead, in the cold mountainous regions, there are mainly: broad-leaved forests, which grow above 500-600 meters above sea level; coniferous forests, which grow over 1,300-1,500 meters; meadows, once reached 2,000 meters; going further up you can find the typical species of the tundra; after 3,000 meters you reach the area of perennial snows. Typical animals of cold regions are: insects; small mammals such as the arctic hare.

In summer, larger mammals migrate there such as: the reindeer; the caribou; the musk ox. The animals of this area defend themselves from the cold: hibernating as they do: the bear; the marten; or migrating south during the colder months, as in the case of the reindeer. Europe is one of the continents where the natural environment has been profoundly modified following the presence and action of man. Very often the plants of the spontaneous vegetation have been replaced by crops of other plant species, sometimes even originating from very distant parts of the world.
