What originally used to be a grain warehouse is now this ruralhut, located at the end of a street, right below a medieval castle. This ‘eagle’s nest’ belongs to the select group of the most beautiful villages of France. Mosset is a large village with its own restaurant and supermarket. Thanks to its 11 windows on three different sides, the ruralhut benefits greatly from the natural light. From the ruralhut’s balcony you have a beautiful wide panorama of the valley and of the top of the Mont Canigou. Free Wi-Fi is available. The ruralhut is decorated using a combination of antique furniture with modern art. The floors on the ground floor are all 300 year old gray slates, which were originally on the roof but are now laid on the floor as some sort of rough mosaic. Inside you have a large kitchen with patio doors to the Carrer de la Font de las Señoras. From here you have a beautiful view of the descending historic street and the mountain edge in the distance.
Nature and surroundings
There are two main reasons why Mosset has earned the title of one of the most beautiful villages of France. This location used to mark the border between France and Catalunya for one, and the second reason has to do with the special vegetation line running along Mosset. If you walk down from Mosset for example, you get to experience the Mediterranean vegetation with palm trees and vineyards, but as you walk up you’ll notice the typical vegetation that only occurs in the high mountains after a few hundred meters. Mosset is also the only village in front of the Col de Jau, a mountain pass that is only used by residents and guests who actually live in the village. This makes the village an oasis of calm. Since the 1970’s the special location of Mosset has had great appeal to creative minds. There are several artists in the village who exhibit their work together each year. Additionally, Mosset is well known in France for its annual ‘Opera de Mosset’. The local community organizes an opera performance in August that is known by and worked on by musicians all over Europe.
