Das Aekingermeer ist ein schöner, sauberer See und hat überall Strände und Liegewiesen. Der Aekingerzand bietet Möglichkeiten für endlose Spaziergänge durch Moore und Sanddünen und hat einen großen Wachturm. Die grünen Dörfer Diever, Vledder, Dwingeloo, Appelscha und Frederiksoord sind nett zu besuchen und haben gute Restaurants und Cafés. Steenwijk, Giethoorn (Weerribben), Meppel, Emmen (Wildland), Drachten, Giethoorn, Leeuwarden und Assen sind ebenfalls schöne Städte für einen Tagesausflug
