The Achterhoek's coulisse landscape is known as one of the most beautiful natural areas in the Netherlands. It can be recognized by small patches of land surrounded by rows of trees and wooded banks, partitions consisting of a mix of shrubs and trees. It is a landscape that has existed for hundreds of years and offers a variety that you see very few places in the Netherlands. There are several biking and hiking trails in the area, including the Pieterpad and the klompenpad (Ganderpad). There are also plenty of opportunities to explore the Oude IJssel. Think, for example, of canoeing or relaxing in a boat. Visit Landgoed Slangenburg (6 minutes by bike from Smidstraat) with its seventeenth-century castle and St. Willibrord Abbey. And with over thirty acres of vineyards, the Achterhoek is one of the largest wine regions in the Netherlands. Doetinchem is a green city with a welcoming center. The train station of Gaanderen is 2 km away, a 15-minute walk.
