Rifugio Principessa Maria di Piemonte, more commonly known as Rifugio di Prato Rosso is located in Pescasseroli and nestled in one of the most beautiful and interesting beech forests in the protected area. Built in the 1930s at the behest of Abruzzo National Park founder Erminio Sipari, it represents the only refuge owned by the Authority on the orographic left of the Sangro River. The structure was built of exposed stone and concrete by local craftsmen. On the ground floor is the living room with a fireplace, kitchen and a small bathroom. Inside, a ladder ladder leads to a double wooden loft and the sleeping quarters with 9 comfortable beds. A rainwater storage tank built under the hut ensures a reserve (non-drinking) even in summer. The Terraegna fountain about a 45-minute walk away provides drinking water year-round.
Nature and surroundings
The Prato Rosso Refuge, thanks to its location, is an ideal base for exploring the entire Monte Marsicano, Terratta and Carapale mountain ranges within the territory of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
