The Fochterloërveen nature reserve is just a stone's throw away and is known for the presence of the crane and the marsh harrier. The national park Drents Friese Wold is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands and offers sand drifts, forest, heath and stream valley grasslands. The historic prison village of Veenhuizen is just around the corner is definitely worth a visit. This is part of the Colonies of Weldadigheid which have been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO. The surroundings are wooded. Appelscha, Roden, Norg, Eelde and Zuidlaren are nice places to visit. Each with its own attractions and nice places to eat. A visit to the Wadden Islands is even fine. The cities Assen, Groningen and Heerenveen are easy to reach and there are several nice bike and walking routes in the area.
