Chalet Groningen

Groningen is widely known as a university city, however the Groningen province has so much more to offer in terms of its nature. If you plan your next trip to the Netherlands, consider Groningen as your destination. The province is the northernmost in the Netherlands and it shares a border with Friesland, Drenthe, and Germany. The province lies on the shore of Wadden Sea and almost the whole territory is widely used for agriculture.

As a nature enthusiast, you will have a chance to best experience the beauty and distinctiveness of Dutch nature by staying in a house among nature. Groningen province provides plenty of opportunities for a peaceful vacation: booking a chalet in the region ensures you will have an amazing time in the great outdoors, waking and going to sleep to nothing else but the sounds of birds. The chalets are situated in secluded areas, away from the city and other busy spots across the province. They are equipped with everything that a chalet could possibly provide to the guests – in terms of comfort as well as entertainment.

The nature of Groningen

Groningen is mostly a flat area, and most parts of it are even below sea level. In fact, the highest point is only 14.6 m high. One of the largest natural gas fields in the world is located here and it regularly causes small earthquakes in the area.

The most interesting natural wonder nearby is the Wadden sea. This is among the best known natural attractions in the country - an intertidal zone of the North Sea. Tidal flats and wetlands create a unique landscape which has turned into an important area for the biological diversity not only in the country, but in Europe as a whole. The wetlands have become a breeding ground for numerous plants, shells, and many birds.

The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Rottum natural reserve. The last one is a protected area consisting of three islands - Rottumerplaat, Rottumeroog, and Zuiderduintjes. Admission to the islands is very restricted under Dutch law but you can always admire them from a bit further.

Activities

Lauwersmeer national park is an area shared and managed by the neighboring provinces of Friesland and Groningen. It consists of a lake of the same name and a beautiful estuary of the river Lauwers which flows into the Wadden Sea. This is a favorite spot for ornitologists, as more than 100 bird species inhabit the forests, grasslands and the water along the river and lake.

Moreover, Lauwersmeer is an official Dark Sky Park. There is little to no light pollution due to its location and proximity to the North Pole, therefore this is a great place for stargazing. The Milky Way is clearly visible on clear weather nights. During the summer, an interesting phenomenon takes place each night: you can see the “sunset” throughout the whole night as the sun doesn’t really set in the territories up north from Groningen.

Essentially similar, but in reality a different national park is located in the Dutch province of Groningen – the Lauwersmeer National Park. This park covers the southern and the eastern parts of the lake of the same name. The Lauwers River pours into the Wadden Sea to the north through a beautiful and rich delta. The delta creates perfect conditions for thousands of rare birds who migrate here each winter. You can spot a lot of grazers around – most frequently Konik horses – they are used in order to keep the grass under control.
