Cyprus is one of the biggest islands in the Mediterranean Sea. People often make a mistake by thinking that Cyprus is situated immediately off the southern Greek coast. However, the island is closer to Turkey – south from it and to the west of Syria. Overall, Cyprus offers visitors the chance to explore its wonderful nature and learn more about the unique history and culture of this country.
Whether you are looking for a unique winter holiday or you are looking to escape from the brisk continental winters, Cyprus is a great place to visit during the colder months. The weather remains nice with average temperatures around 20° C and the place turns into the perfect getaway for those who don’t appreciate the cold of winter. We offer numerous accommodation options around the island, including villas, cottages and lodges. The hosts will make sure you are comfortable and have a pleasant stay during your winter holiday!
The nature on the island
What you can find anywhere on the island are endless stretches of white sand, dramatic cliffs and amazing gorges. Speaking of gorges, an amazing place to visit is the Avakas Gorge on the Akamas Peninsula. This area bears the characteristics of a wild and mountainous place, where numerous animals and plants have made home under or on the rocks. The gorge itself provides a wonderful natural experience. The gorge walls are made of chalk and are famous for their special way of reflecting light, changing the color of the gorge throughout the year. Along the path to and through the gorge you may have a chance to spot Centaurea Akamantis – an extremely rare plant.
Another beautiful part of the island is the area around the capital Nicosia. There is a city nearby, which used to be one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean during the Middle ages. Together with Venice and Genoa, Famagusta was one of the stops along sailor’s routes in the past. Today, this is a dreamy destination for travelers, with stunning nature and close to the water. The coastline is beautiful, with numerous bays, beaches, coves and lagoons. The Blue Lagoon is a wonderful natural wonder at the easternmost point of the island. You can swim in its warm waters or simply admire its turquoise beauty on a breezy day.
If you are looking for wild nature to explore, head to Akamas. This national park is home to impressive flora and fauna species such as Lara turtles, orchids and the Glaucopsyche Paphos Butterfly, which is indigenous to the area.
Activities
Avakas Gorge is considered as one of the best trekking experiences in Europe. The nature trail, which follows it, starts from a village near the coast – Agios Georgios Peyas. In the southern parts of the gorge, pine trees, cypresses and junipers grow right from the rocks!
Hiking is suitable for those of you who are not as experienced. For example, there is a beautiful trail, which will take you to the Baths of Aphrodite and up the cliffs around the area.
