Lapland is a vast northern territory shared by Sweden and Finland, populated with indigenous tribes and wild animals, enduring the vicious arctic winters. The Finnish territory of Lapland is divided into Forest-Lapland mostly to the south and Fell-Lapland to the north. The two are also different in terms of geography, hence the names. Fell-Lapland is located in the mountain fells of the Scandinavian Mountain range. The Lapland region is truly wild, thus conservation is of great importance and the area includes more than 20 natural and wilderness parks, such as the Urho Kekkonen and the Lemmenjoki National park.

Although during summer there are many more trekking routes to explore, in the winter some of them are still open for tourists. Some of the most interesting routes are in the Urho Kekkonen National Park, where except for the amazing panoramas you will get to meet some of its wild inhabitants – wolfs and Eurasian Lynxes, red deer and Arctic foxes.

In the same national park, there are also winter ski areas, the most famous of which are located near Saariselkä and Kiilopää Fell Centre. The slopes are regularly maintained and marked in accordance with their level of difficulty.

Snowmobiling is a popular activity for both locals and tourists. It is one of the best ways to explore the wild Suomi territories, even the farthest and most secluded ones, otherwise inaccessible by foot or car. One of the best routes for snowmobiling is in Rovaniemi (Lapland) and it’s a 3-hour-trip through the best powder throughout the country.
