Last minute Crete

If you feel like you need an adventure into the wild, but you cannot decide whether you want to relax by the sea or explore nature through numerous

activities, then Crete is the answer to your prayers. Enjoy some of the best Mediterranean views in Europe on the biggest island in Greece. As the home of the first advanced civilization in the world, the Minoans, this island will not only capture your attention with amazing culture and history, but also with its beautiful mountainous landscape. The island is a preferred tourist destination in Greece due to the unique combination of more than 30 mountain peaks higher than 2,000 meter and award-winning beaches. Staying in a nature house allows you to cherish a balance between exercising while on a discovery through the island’s nature and relaxing on the beautiful coast of Crete.

A natural bliss in the middle of the Mediterranean

The most typical characteristic of any mountainous region is the existence of impressive gorges where the rivers cut through the mountains. Crete is no different and the rivers crossing it have created some striking canyons worth the visit. There are more than 400 gorges on the island and all of them are magnificent monuments of nature’s power.

The Imbros Gorge is located close to Chania and is named after a community of immigrants from the now-Turkish island of Imbros, relocating here during the 15th century. Spectacular rock formations and a part-desert-part-canyon environment welcomes visitors to the gorge. Here, you can quite literally walk through all of the gorge curves on a path at the bottom of the gorge. The Imbros Gorge is a better hiking option mainly due to the fact that the hike is easier than the one through the most popular Samarian gorge, but also because there are less tourists here making the hike a much nicer walk through nature. The most interesting aspect is the fact that Imbros gorge played an important role for the Allies during WWII. For a number of people, mainly those whose ancestors have fought on this particular location, walking through the gorge serves as a way to reconnect with lost relatives and to honor them; therefore, the personal stories and military tales you will likely hear provide for an experience unlike any other.

Activities to try on the island of Crete

Near the capital Heraclion, a 7.5 kilometers long gorge under the name of Rouvas is extremely important for the island’s ecosystem. Rouvas has created a biodiversity of flora and fauna hardly seen anywhere else. There is a hiking trail passing through the gorge, which begins from Lake Zaros. The whole trail is 9 km long and promises an amazing experience, if you disregard the unpleasant nature condition at the beginning of the trail (due to a massive 1994 fire).

Except for hiking through one of the many gorges on the island, the more adventurous among you could try the off-road buggy adventure available throughout Crete. Moreover, scuba diving, snorkeling and boat trips are also a popular way to get acquainted with the other very important aspect of Crete – the marine life.
