Nature

Located in the heart of Europe, Switzerland is divided into three geographical areas: the Alps, the Central Plain and the Jura. The diversity of landscapes and habitats contributes to the attractiveness of living conditions and the economic location of the country. Switzerland has twelve sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. Due to its topography and large differences in altitude, Switzerland has a large number of microclimates. These environments offer a wide variety of animal and plant species. Switzerland is home to about 50,000 different species of plants, fungi and animals. As a key element of Swiss identity, the mountain occupies two-thirds of the national territory. It is quite a hostile environment, but many species have adapted to it. For example, six hundred phanerogamous plants exist only in the alpine arch.

Mountain flora and fauna

The mountain occupies two thirds of Swiss territory. From vacation heat to icy cold, from poor vegetation to lush vegetation, from very dry to very humid climates: the mountains are a real treasure of nature. It is quite a hostile environment, but a number of animals and plants have managed to adapt to it. The alpine environment offers refuge for a number of rare plant and animal species, while illustrating the beauty of nature in all its aspects. They represent a unique space for wildlife.

Many alpine species became extinct almost in the early 20th century due to human exploitation and hunting, but some such as the ibex, chamois or bearded vulture have been successfully reintroduced.Switzerland is committed to preserving the biodiversity of its mountains and sharing its knowledge through joint projects. In this way, the Alpine country provides its social, economic and environmental experience in the service of other mountain communities.

Switzerland has over 230 natural environments, such as meadows, shores, swamps, forests or even cities, and about 64,000 animal, plant and fungal species, of which 45,890 are known. This richness is explained by the country's climatic contrasts and topography. Alpine regions and forest areas concentrate the greatest diversity of species. Streams and rivers offer indispensable habitats for very rare species. In addition, biodiversity is essential for human well-being and is of great importance to the economy. The government is protecting this natural heritage to ensure its protection.

Entertainment activities

Switzerland has an extensive network of over 65,000km of evenly marked trails and alpine trails. 21,000 km of this network correspond to sometimes spectacular mountain routes. Several international routes cross Switzerland, such as the Camino de Santiago or Via Alpina. In addition, Switzerland attracts mountaineers from all over the world, captured by the Matterhorn and the northern wall of the Eiger. About 143,000 members are registered with the Swiss Alpine Club, founded in 1863. He manages 152 cabins and takes care of the maintenance of the paths, partly located in Hautes-Alpes.

The large number of lakes and rivers in Switzerland offers fans the practice of many water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, wakeboarding and rowing. The Swiss Federation of Sailing Professionals was established in 1939, and the Swiss Federation of Marine Skiing and Wakeboarding in 1947. Switzerland has won twice with the Alinghi team - in 2003 and 2007 - the world's most prestigious regatta, the Copa of America.

Thermal baths have a long tradition in Switzerland. The Romans already had fun two thousand years ago in their baths in the present city of Baden. The rise of thermal baths in Switzerland began in the 19th century, and further development took place in the late 20th century. There are currently about 20 thermal baths in Switzerland. The most famous are those of Vals, Leukerbad or Bad Zurzach.

There are many amusement parks in Switzerland. In the Swiss park Vapeur in Bouveret, model steam railways circulate along a two-kilometer route. Alpamare in Pfafikon is the largest indoor water park in Europe. Swissminiatur in Melide is an outdoor installation in which the most typical buildings, monuments and landscapes of the Alpine country are presented in miniature.

Weather in Switzerland

Due to its central location in the heart of Europe, Switzerland is located at the crossroads of extremely different climatic zones. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean - whose moist air masses are directed towards the Alps - has a significant impact on the Swiss climate. These westerly winds have the effect of mitigating the climate in both winter and summer, as well as bringing rainfall throughout the year.

The Alpine chain acts as a major climatic barrier between northern and southern Switzerland. It also includes a series of complex microclimates, in particular the Grisons and Valesan valleys, which stand out, among other features, for their dryness. Another feature of the Swiss climate is the fairy. From autumn to spring, this wind, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the Alps, creates markedly dry and moderate conditions.

Temperatures vary considerably depending on altitude. In the Central Plain, the average temperature is about 1°C in January and 17°C in July. In Ticino, the thermal values usually exceed the average value of the plane by two or three degrees Celsius. At an altitude of 1500 meters the average temperatures are -5°C in January and 11°C in July. At this altitude, precipitation usually falls like snow in winter. In contrast, snowfall to the lowest levels is rare in French-speaking Switzerland(Geneva region), the northern regions of the country(Basel region) and the extreme south of Ticino.
