Flora and fauna in Turkey

The flora of Turkey has more than 6,000 different plants. Along with large coniferous and deciduous forests, fruit trees, holliuts and tea are grown. From the point of view of representatives of flora and fauna, the most interesting part of Turkey is the Anatolian region. The Anatolian plateau abounds in numerous varieties of semi-desert and steppe vegetation: wormwood, feather grass, sage, astragalus, camel thorn, tulips and others.

On the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, along with extensive deciduous and coniferous forests grow citrus fruits, pomegranate, bananas, olive trees, grapes, cherries, apricots and almonds.

The flora of Turkey depends on the climatic conditions and topography of the area. Along the Black Sea coast moist subtropical forests, consisting mainly of maple, oak, hornbeam, plane tree with undergrowth of hazel, dogwood, boxwood, evergreen shrubs and lianas(wild grapes, clematis, ivy).

On the shores of the Aegean, Marmara and Mediterranean Seas, at an altitude of 600-800 m, there are bushy evergreen formations of dry subtropics, such as maquis: laurel, strawberry tree, wild pistachio, myrtle, oleander, wild olive and other shrubs associated with hardwood; deciduous shrubs - hornbeam, beans, oak and others; wild fruits: walnut, carob, wild plum, wild almond and others; pine, oak and cypress groves. Orchids, bulbs and annuals grow in more open areas.

Representatives of the local fauna are wolves and bears, wild goats and wild boars. In the forests of the mountainous areas there are red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar, jackal, fox, leopard, wolf, bear, badger. Because hunting in Turkey was uncontrollable in the last century, many species of fauna were on the verge of extinction. The Turkish government has currently issued a number of laws aimed at protecting wildlife. Huge areas of pristine nature are preserved as national parks and reserves.

Bezoar goats and mouflons live in the mountains, the steppe lynx, caracals and jackals have taken over the plateau. The wild donkey and representatives of African animals - ichneumon and striped hyena - are found in southeastern Turkey. The bird world in Turkey is diverse: you can meet representatives of seasonal migration and rare species of white storks and flamingos.
